Irving Spector nasce l’11 luglio 1914 a Brooklyn, New York, da Samuel e Anna Spector.

A sedici anni interrompe gli studi superiori e fa la prima esperienza nel campo dell’animazione allo studio Universal. L’anno successivo è alla Disney come assistente animatore, poi lavora per Charles Mintz. Successivamente è sceneggiatore per Schlesinger/Warner Bros, poi passa allo studio dei fratelli Fleischer, dove anima cortometraggi e lungometraggi, prima a New York e poi a Miami, in Florida.

Viene richiamato alle armi il 20 agosto 1941. Come molti altri animatori in uniforme, viene destinato alla Signal Corps Animation Unit dell’Esercito USA, dove realizza cortometraggi per l’addestramento delle truppe.

Nel 1942 realizza le sue prime storie a fumetti, pubblicate sugli albi della editrice Better/Standard.

Dopo il congedo, Spector torna all’ex studio Fleischer, ora chiamato Famous Studios e acquistato dalla Paramount Pictures. A partire dal 1950 è soprattutto sceneggiatore di cortometraggi, e continuerà a collaborare con lo studio Paramount fino al 1961.

Prosegue nel frattempo la sua attività di fumettista sia per i comic books, sia creando per il quotidiano New York Herald Tribune la tavola umoristica Coogy, una sorta di “versione alternativa” del Pogo di Walt Kelly, che realizza per circa tre anni. Il suo stile, guizzante e efficacissimo, fa di lui uno dei cartoonists più originali di ogni tempo. Lo nota anche Harvey Kurtzman, che gli chiede invano di collaborare all’albo satirico Mad.

Dopo aver invano tentato di lanciare un’altra strip, Spector abbandona definitivamente i fumetti nel 1954 per dedicarsi completamente all’animazione.

Negli anni successivi e fino alla sua scomparsa, avvenuta il 4 febbraio 1977, collabora con gli studi Elektra, Ed Graham, UPA, Chuck Jones, Pantomime Pictures, De Patie-Freleng, Hanna-Barbera e Filmation.
