Lo storico, critico e filologo Alberto Becattini riprende a presentare su questo blog alcuni profili di fumettisti americani ben poco noti, ma non per questo meno talentuosi, a cominciare dal cartoonist della foto a destra.

Cecil Hays Surry nasce il 19 aprile 1907 nello stato di Washington e cresce in una fattoria nella Chelan County, di proprietà dei genitori Bert e Eliza (Lydia).
Lydia muore alla metà degli anni Venti, e Bert decide di trasferirsi con Cecil e il figlio minore Paul a San Diego, in California.
Nel 1929, a Hollywood, Surry inizia la sua carriera presso lo Studio Disney come assistente animatore. Due anni dopo è animatore a pieno titolo nel team che si occupa delle Silly Symphonies.
Nel 1932 passa allo studio di Walter Lantz, dove contribuisce ai cortometraggi di Oswald the Rabbit insieme con Tex Avery e Sid Sutherland. Quando, nel 1935, Avery viene assunto come regista presso lo studio diretto da Leon Schlesinger per la Warner Bros., Surry e Sutherland lo seguono ed entrano nel suo team di animatori, occupandosi principalmente di Porky Pig.
Nel frattempo Surry ha sposato Constance Berry (già inchiostratrice e colorista allo Studio Disney), che gli darà tre figli: Kathleen, Sheila e John.
Negli anni Quaranta Surry è attivo come animatore presso gli studi MGM e Hugh Harman Productions. Nel 1948 disegna le sue prime storie a fumetti per l’editrice Dell/Western. Si occupa principalmente dei personaggi della MGM (Tom & Jerry, Barney Bear, Fuzzy and Wuzzy), ma realizza anche una storia con personaggi disneyani.
La sua carriera come disegnatore prosegue mentre riprende quella di animatore. Dal 1950 al 1952 è alla UPA, dove si occupa soprattutto del miopissimo Mr. Magoo.
Per alcuni mesi, nel 1952-53, torna allo studio di Walter Lantz, poi rientra alla UPA e riprende a contribuire ai cartoni di Mr. Magoo. In questi anni abita con la famiglia sul Topanga Canyon Boulevard, a Woodland Hills, in California.
Purtroppo scompare il 19 settembre 1956, a soli 49 anni, per attacco cardiaco.
