Come sono andati questi premi canadesi, dedicati alla memoria di Joe Shuster?
Quasi sicuramente, potrei sbagliare, un riconoscimento è andato a questa versione graficamente inconsueta dell’Uomo Ragno.
Lo so, i giovani lettori e aficionados in genere storcono il naso quando Spider-Man viene chiamato alla vecchia maniera.
Domenica scorsa sono stati assegnati, nel corso di una cerimonia che qui si può rivivere per intero, provando emozioni titanicamente ciclopiche, ascoltandone l’audio.

In quei francobollini commemorativi che si trovano sotto il post, e che di solito sono anc’essi in Inglese, si possono trovare altrettanti link sul tema. Si tratta di un’innovazione dell’ultima settimana di TypePad, non so se ve n’eravati accorti, un modo per rendere più tentacolare e piovresco ciascun articoletto.
Established in 2004, The Joe Shuster Awards are Canada’s first national and bilingual award recognizing outstanding achievement in the creation of comic books, graphic novels and webcomics.
The awards are named after pioneering Toronto-born artist Joe Shuster who, along with writer Jerry Siegel (whom Sauro Pennacchioli dislikes, disgusted, created the iconic super-powered hero, Superman. The name is used with the approval of the Estate of Joe Shuster – Michael Catron, Estate Agent.
Già, era nato a Toronto; non l’avevmo scritto, anche se parlammo di lui più volte, anche dal punto di vista architettonico (si veda più sotto).
Qui vedete immortalato nientepopodimeno che Jerry Siegel, a sinistra, meglio noto da molti frequentatori di questo blog come autore, nella sua tarda età, di storie con Topolino e Paperino per la Mondadori, ma anche (spero) come co-creatore di Superman, insieme al disegnatore Joe Shuster, a destra in questa rara foto della coppia.
I due sono un po’ mesti, e non hanno torto.

In questi tempi si parla della casa di Shuster, o meglio, di quella di Siegel, o meglio ancora di quella di Clark Kent, a Cleveland, in Ohio; la vedete variamente in questo post, con la palizzata abbellita da gigantografie della prima storia di Superman.

In 1933, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two boys from Jewish immigrant families who lived in the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland, created Superman. This month, Smithsonian magazine tells the story behind the superhero, and what some citizens are doing to show their pride. Shortly after Siegel and Shuster died in the 1990s, a… struggle for recognition of Superman’s creators took place in Cleveland.
Michael Sangiacomo, a comic books critic and a reporter for Cleveland’s The Plain Dealer, called on the city to honor Siegel and Shuster.
Nothing came of it.
Every few years he would trot the idea out again, writing an article calling on Cleveland to honor the pair. “I pointed out that the Siegel house was here [the home of Joe Shuster had been torn down], and that is the home of Superman, and the city should do something.”
In his will, Siegel asked that half of his ashes be donated to the city of Cleveland; his widow also wanted to donate some of his belongings to the city, such as his typewriter. She visited Cleveland to find a home for them, and Sangiacomo escorted her around town. “Nobody wanted them,” he remembers. “It was a low point. I felt horrible for her and mad at the city…”
Sangiacomo and comic writer Brad Meltzer decided to raise money to restore the house.
Melzer uploaded a video of himself at the house that went viral. He followed by sponsoring an auction of comics-related art, raising over $100,000 in the process.
Sangiacomo and Meltzer formed the nonprofit Siegel and Shuster Society, and asked the Glenville Community Development Corporation to take charge of restoring the house, in partnership with the Grays.

Tanto per gradire ho aggiunto qualche immagine del nostro “Nembo Kid”.
Nella copertina sopra, appartenente ai comic book della Golden Age dove tutto e di più accadeva, nell’albo dedicato alla fidanzata mancata di Superman, Luisa Lane (Lois Lane) fa un’incursione il cantante melodico Pat Boone.
Roba (un po’) da matti, francamente, ma che potrà incuriosire qualche appassionato di musica pop vintage (penso a Felmang, per esempio). Superman non la prende bene, e somministra alla fedifraga una punizioncella.
Chi non conosce Pat Boone, può aggiornarsi con un suo cavallo di battaglia, che riproduco nelle dimensioni di un francobollo commemorativo mobile.
Non male…
E in questo video raro e saltellante sotto, tratto dal Pat Boone Chevy Show, brilla di ridicolezza in un segmento del 1957 al fianco di Gina Lollobrigida (che ha l’ardire di cantare in Inglese).
Nella manifestazione canadese s’incontra di tutto, anche fans hard-core di Stitch, come si vede.
