Alessandro Biffignandi is an illustrator and oil painter rather than a comic artist, and his work can be seen in many areas of the publishing media.

Alessandro Biffignandi was born in Rome in 1935, where he attended the Favalli studios learning his art. In 1958 he moved to Milan.

From the late 1950’s into the early 60’s Biffignandi worked via the Milanese art agency’s for the French market where he painted covers for various pocket comics for publisher LUG such as Nevada, Hondo, Kiwi, Yuma and Rodeo. He also drew the strips Rombo Bill (Rodeo 1959), Flambo (Flambo 1959), Antonin (Nevada), Agent Special K3 (Special Rodeo 1966), Sergeant Fury (Zembla) and Peter Berg (Hondo 1964).

The late 60’s found him working for Fleetway where he was painting the covers for The Spider and Johnny Nero (note the resemblance to Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni) in the Fleetway Super Library series. The Spider was one of the most popular strips of this period originally drawn by Reg Bunn, then taken over for a while by American Jerry Siegel (of Superman fame). The Super Library was a reprise of the original series that started in the Lion comic series. He also drew at least one cover for Thriller Picture Library.

Biffignandi always feels more comfortable painting in oils, hence his career move in the early 1980’s to abandon comics and to concentrate on book illustration. His covers have graced books published in the UK, United States and Italy. From the late 1990’s Biffignandi was drawing calendars for, amongst others, the Italian Guardia di Finanza (Italy’s fiscal police force).
