Altra notizia tristissima, aveva 96 anni, se n’è andato il giorno 13, poco prima che la sua ultima intervista venisse pubblicata.
A intervistare il simpaticissimo 96enne creatore di Dondi era stato John Christopher Fine.
“Read All About It…This Boy Needs His Buddies,” proclaimed the front page of the Daily Comet. Liz ‘The Weeper’ Teary did the story and Tip Lenz took pictures in the New York City Police Department’s 7th Precinct. The wide-eyed six-year old stowaway held a large ice cream cone, Officer Kelly’s over-size hat upon his head. The heartwarming genesis of a little European post-World War II orphan befriended by two American GIs began with that 1955 comic strip.
The boys, Dondi’s buddies, Corporal Ted Wills and Private First Class Whitey McGowan, were heading home. The war was over. The Iron Curtain had fallen over a ravaged, refugee-deluged Europe trying to rebuild. Shipped back to the States, the soldiers figured they left the little orphan behind.

Del vecchio Irwin avevamo parlato come segue, una delle volte in cui ci eravamo occupati di lui in questo blog.
Questo post piacerà ad Alberto Becattini e anche a tutti coloro che nell’eccezionale quanto turbolenta edizione autunnale di Lucca Comics tenutasi nell’anno 1999 hanno avuto l’opportunità di conoscere Irwin Hasen, insieme a un visibilio di altri ospiti di oltreoceano (e non) incontrati alla San Diego Comic-Con dell’estate precedente.
Della cerimonia di premiazione e degli incontri di quell’edizione non abbiamo traccia, né fotografica, né video (eppure, filmati furono fatti, foto ne furono scattate… ma avvenne ben di peggio, allora e nei mesi a seguire). E Irwin non sarebnbe tornato nel Bel Paese, sigh, né l’avremmo più incontrato.
Ma ancora danza, come si vede nel finale del trailer sotto, orgoglioso della sua “classe 1918”.
Adesso è pronto un film che ne scandisce con fantasia le tappe della lunghissima e gloriosa carriera.
Ci viene voglia di vederlo.
Ci piacerebbe presentarlo anche da queste parti.

… a portrait of Irwin Hasen, a legend of the golden age of cartooning and co-creator of the comic strip Dondi, which ran for more than 30 years. Irwin is also remembered for his artistic contributions to The Flash, Wildcat, Wonder Woman, All Star Comics and the Green Lantern among many others.
This personal narrative is told by the 92 year old Hasen, a charming raconteur. The independent documentary is packed with archival photos, clips and animation as well as interviews with Irwin’s legendary friends, including writer/cartoonist Jules Feiffer, Carmine Infantino, Paul Levitz of DC Comics, writer Roy Thomas, cartoonist.
