Qualcuno potrà dire che battiamo sempre sugli stessi tasti.
Forse è vero, chissà.
Ma non si può trascurare l’uscita di un volume magnifico come questo, del quale un Maestro come Aldo Di Gennaro si è mostrato entusiasta, mostrandomelo orgogliosamente via Skype, poiché considera Alex Toth un suo silente mentore. Forse il maggiore, fra quanti hanno ispirato l’inizio della sua carriera.
Anche a questo si accennerà nel volume su Aldo Di Gennaro realizzato a cura di Facta Manent / Napoli Comicon che uscirà in coincidenza con l’apertura della bella mostra sull’autore che si terrà a Lucca, presso i locali del MUF (Museo Italiano del Fumetto), alla fine dell’estate.
Del tutto sarete informati.
Toth è anche un punto di riferimento per Ratigher, autore di quello che è stato definito (e scusate se è poco) “La vetta più alta finora raggiunta dal nuovo fumetto italiano d’autore”.
La citazione è da Comics Babylonia, un blog il cui gestore ha sintonie non secondarie con quelle di chi si agita intorno a Cartoonist Globale (a cominciare da Tex Avery e Romano Scarpa).
Ratigher ha pubblicato alla fine della primavera il suo graphic novel horrorifico Trama – Il peso di una testa mozzata, stupendamente sdtampato e rilegato dalla benemerita casa editrice genovese GRRRZetic, della quale non parliamo da un po’.
Questa cura nella confezione del prodotto (termine orrendo, evvabbe’, non sono) fa davvero la differenza se confrontata con la trascuratezza diffusa che regna anche nella routine di editori da sempre a bagnomaria nel mainstream, e che non possono invece permettersela perdendo l’occasione di dare il buon esempio. Uff.
Ratigher vuole testimoniare il suo debito verso Tothe e lo fa anche (bontà sua) affidandoci un’immagine inedita realizzata da lui e dal suo gruppo di (Super)amici.
Ecco, dice:
Ti mando l’immagine che avevamo proposto nel 2009 per il manifesto di Bilbolbul, e l’originale tothiano.
Ci avevano chiesto di occuparci dell’illustrazione come Super Amici, così avevamo realizzato questo disegno a 5 mani, omaggio alla serie animata degli Herculoids di Hanna & Barbera, creata dal nostro amatissimo Alex Toth.
Il lavoro è piaciuto ma è stato scartato perchè distante dai temi e dai contenuti del festival. E’ stato poi scelto un disegno di Maicol & Mirco (dal quale è nata in seguito una serie chiamata “Arcanoidi“, http://thearcanoids.blogspot.com/ ).
L’omaggio a Toth è così suddiviso:
– Zandor, Tarra e Dorno (i tre umani) realizzati dal Dr. Pira (grande appassionato dei disegni di Giancarlo Tonna, aggiungo io);
– Zok (il dinosauro volante) realizzato da Ratigher;
– Igoo (lo scimmione di roccia) realizzato da Tuono Pettinato;
– Tundro (il rinoceronte quadricornuto) realizzato da Maicol & Mirco;
– Gloop e Gleep (i mutaforme protoplasmatici) realizzati da LRNZ.
A parte queste divagazioni, torniamo al volume segnalato da Aldo Di Gennaro, ma per corroborare un patetico quanto inutile vezzo, sarà opportuno farlo in lingua inglese…

Produced by the Eisner Award-winning team of Dean Mullaney and Bruce Canwell— who produced Scorchy Smith and the Art of Noel Sickles—Genius, Isolated is a lavishly illustrated book that includes the first biography of this giant figure. The book has been compiled with complete access to the family archives, and with the full cooperation of Toth’s children.
Toth fans and friends throughout the world have loaned original artwork reproduced in the entire series. Included are many examples of Toth’s art, from complete stories to rare pages, as well as an unfinished and unpublished penciled story from the early 1950s!
The tome covers his earliest stories at DC in the 1940s, his defining work at Standard, his incomparable Zorro comics in the 1950s, and a special section collects, for the first time, the complete Jon Fury pages that Toth produced while in the army, a section that alone is worth the price of admission.
Alex Toth was more than a unique and influential artist. He was a keenly insightful philosopher about comics, cartooning, and animation—with opinions on how they are created as opposed to how he felt they should be created. He wasn’t shy about expressing those thoughts, whether in sometimes-scathing personal letters, essays for publication, or letters to the editor.
To flesh out the complete story of his life and art, Mullaney and Canwell have spent more than a year conducting wide-ranging interviews with dozens of Toth’s peers, friends, and family members.
