M-G-M Studio / Rexall Drug Stores’ Staff Artist,
TOM ‘N JERRY MEET GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS, 1949.
For many decades Rexall Drug Stores was a major, nationwide retail chain selling prescription drugs, cosmetics, health and home care products, and other merchandise.
It was headquartered in Los Angeles, California and in its heyday published Rexall Magazine, a free monthly magazine for its customers featuring illustrated articles, stories, and advertisements.
This handsome original art telling a story based on Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera‘s Tom and Jerry cartoons for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was created by a Rexall staff artist, approved by MGM, and published as a 2-page Childhood Memories feature in the September 1949 issue.
It tells the story of a joyful visit by Tom and Jerry to the home of The Three Bears, where they meet Goldilocks.
The art measures 24 1/2″ x 37″ and it is drawn in black and gray lithographic crayon with green watercolor on 28 1/2″ x 39″ illustration board.
The titles and text are mounted in place as the board was photographed for reproduction; the green watercolor became red in the printing because red was the only color in the otherwise black-and-white magazine.
