Nei giorni desertici che in Italia seguono a ruota il Ferragosto quasi tutto sembra tacere anche nella rete.
Bisogna rivolgerci ai siti esteri per scovare qualcosa da leggere.
Così, troviamo anche la memoria di Francisco Solano López (foto a destra, con un modellino dell'Eternauta) raccolta dal critico americano Kim Thompson, che sottolinea come il grande fumettista scomparso il giorno 12 sia conosciuto negli Stati Uniti soprattutto per i fumetti a luci rosse, quelli che in Italia era possibile leggere tramite Coniglio Editore e che (in precedenza) aveva cominciato a pubblicare L'Eternauta (inteso come rivista delle E.P.C. di Alvaro Zerboni e associati).
In particolare, questo glorioso mensile riprendeva in Italia la serie gialla x-rated (non hard core, ma non per ragazzini) Evaristo, scritta da Carlos Sampayo e pubblicata con il titolo Deep City negli Stati Uniti nel 1986.
Ricordo bene di aver scritto una presentazione in merito al momento della sua uscita in Italia, battendola su una Olivetti "Lettera 22", prima che nelle redazioni si usasse obbligatoriamente il computer, ordigno che negli anni Ottanta possedeva quasi solo Alfredo Castelli (esagero, ma...).
Kim Thompson chiude il pezzo con un sincero apprezzamento dell'uomo Solano Lopez, cortese, schietto, di ottimo carattere.
Speaking as someone who worked with Solano during much of these last two decades (and who met him when he visited the United States), I can say that he was the absolute exemplar of the courtly South American gentleman, an enthusiastic and ultra-reliable professional, and an artist to the core.
I can still remember him sitting quietly in a corner of the Fantagraphics house on one of our ratty office chairs, surreptitiously creating stunning pencil drawings of staffers, which he would then present to the delighted subjects. His life and his work were defined by integrity, skill, and courage. I am delighted to have worked on and published so many of his comics, honored to have known him, and saddened that he is no longer with us.
